The “top” is not quite flat but has a very shallow peak near one corner. Without the stand, the drive is mostly a standard box shape but with a few shallow bevels at irregular angles. If you don’t like that look, you can just ditch the stand. This very unusual look may appeal to some. On the other hand, the LG drive doesn’t make this noise. In the drive’s defense, I use the drive on its side with other drives on either side. This can often be quieted down to more reasonable noise levels by gently nudging the drive into a slightly different position. But frequently, the Asus drive will start to “rattle” at high speed, and it becomes quite loud. The Asus drive is always slightly noisier than the LG drive. I have not done any formal benchmarked speed tests, but I have read thousands of discs with these drives, so take this for what it’s worth. My impression is that the Asus drive may on occasion be very slightly faster than the LG drive. The Asus drive may be slightly faster on some reads, but is noisier and has an unusual shape. But perhaps my descriptions below will help you match the quirks of each drive with your own personal priorities. Again, you won’t be making a mistake by buying either of these great drives. The differences between the drives are really quite minor. My Asus drive has not failed, but I have only had it for about one year. I got more than my money’s worth from the first one.
